Arriving in a perfect tonal colourway, the Universal Works x Birkenstock Zurich Sandals feature aesthetic influences inspired by David Keyte. The soft suede upper is finished in taupe, with sand overlays providing a darker contrast as well as minimalist detailing such as the iconic black buckles which provide adjustability to the shoes fit. These earthy tones are complemented by the exposed cork footbed, while the iconic look is finished with a white and gum outsole. Although the visual design aspects have been altered, the core function that allows Birkenstock to make the most comfortable sandals has been maintained. The footbed is made from a cork, latex mixture for responsive cushioning, with an anatomic shape to ensure that each step is as comfortable as the last. Additionally the EVA outsole has been hand applied with a specific tread pattern to provide both flexibility and grip.
Birkenstock was founded in the 1770’s in Germany and following over three centuries of experience it’s understandable why it's considered the global leader in comfort orientated orthopedic footwear. The collaboration was born out of David Keyte’s (UW founder and head designer) love for Birkenstock, a brand with whom he’d always aspired to collaborate.
